Japanese man jailed in China speaks out about his experiences

In an ordeal that stretches back over eight years, Japanese national Hideji Suzuki first attracted the attention of Chinese security service officers while serving as the director of the Japan-China Youth Exchange Program. He was arrested and jailed, and served six years in prison on espionage charges that, to this day, he vehemently denies.
Now back in Japan, Suzuki has agreed to share the details of an experience that not only sheds light on the conditions inside a Chinese jail cell, but also offers some insight into the often opaque levers of Chinese state control.
It is rare for the details of a case of Chinese incarceration involving a Japanese national to be divulged in detail, and the FCCJ is pleased to welcome Suzuki for a discussion of his case and how it sheds light on the topic of arbitrary arrests and human rights in China.
