Akira Igata, Project Lecturer, Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo
11:00-12:00 Tuesday, October 18, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)
China is approaching the 20th congress of the Chinese Communist Party, a milestone in the power struggle between the Middle Kingdom and the USA, and one with wide ranging implications on supply chains and the economic security of Japan and the world.
Today more countries are striving to bring production of critical products like semiconductors home and to become part of global supply chains in order to increase their security. Japan, a victim of economic sanctions by China ten years ago, has a head start in these efforts. In 2020, soon after the coronavirus outbreak, the Japanese government introduced subsidies for relocating supply chains out of China. Japan has reaped the first fruits of the policy, attracting a chip plant of Taiwanese semiconductor foundry TSMC. Please join FCCJ as two experts, Mariko Togashi with the IISS and Akira Agita from the Tokyo University, discuss the current state of industrial reorganization and possible future paths for Japan.
Mariko Togashi is a research fellow for Japanese security and defense policy at the London-based thinktank International Institute for Strategic Studies. Prior to her current position, she served as the API Matsumoto-Samata Fellow at the Asia Pacific Initiative (currently The International House of Japan), where she launched and led the National Economic Security Strategy Project. From 2014 to 2019, she worked as an equity analyst at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (currently BofA Securities) and Deutsche Bank for the Japanese technology sector.
Akira Igata is a Project Lecturer at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, dealing with Japanese security and foreign policy among others. In addition, he is Adjunct Senior Fellow at Pacific Forum, a US-based thinktank, and a Non-Executive Director at the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China. Prior to his current position, he led the Center for Rule-making Strategies at Tama University. He also advises the Japanese government, bureaucracy, and the private sector in various capacities.
