PRESS CONFERENCE
Japan's next prime minister
Gerald L. Curtis, Burgess Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Columbia University
11:00-12:00 Monday, October 6, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.
On the first working day after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party selects its new leader — and almost certainly Japan's next prime minister — the FCCJ will host Gerald Curtis, one of America's foremost scholars of Japanese politics. Curtis will provide his analysis of the weekend's leadership race, its outcome, and the prospects and challenges awaiting the new LDP chief.
Curtis, professor emeritus of political science at Columbia University, is widely regarded as a leading authority on Japan's political system, with decades of research and writing that have shaped how both scholars and policymakers understand the dynamics of Japanese democracy. He has advised governments and has published extensively on Japanese elections and policymaking.
