PRESS CONFERENCE

"Climate change: the latest IPCC report is a source of anxiety, but also of hope"

Jean-Pascal van Ypersele, Former Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Vice-Chair

15:00-16:00 Wednesday April 19, 2023
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

"There is a rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all," is the blunt warning given one month ago in the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report concludes that human greenhouse gas emissions are already raising sea levels and causing extreme weather. The worst global warming scenarios can only be limited by rapidly and deeply reducing those emissions. The report optimistically notes that there are multiple opportunities for scaling up climate action.

The club has invited the noted climatologist Jean-Pascal van Ypersele to guide us through the challenges and possibilities presented in the IPCC report at this press conference. Van Ypersele is professor of climatology and sustainable development at the Belgian university UCLouvain has been involved with the IPCC since 1995. He served as a vice-chair from 2008 to 2015 and is currently a candidate to be the next chair of the organization. His vision for the IPCC is to make it the most scientifically solid "Voice of Climate" at the international level.
