PRESS CONFERENCE

"Japan-China Diplomatic Strategy and the Japanese Communist Party"
Kazuo Shii, Japanese Communist Party Chairman

June 12, Monday, 14:00-15:00(Press Conference)
(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

Concerned about Japan-China relations and the tensions over Taiwan, the Japanese Communist Party has proposed a diplomatic strategy that calls for recognizing that neither side is a threat to the other, resolving the Senkaku Islands dispute through dialogue and consultation, and realizing an ASEAN proposal to make the East Asia Summit a framework for regional peace.

But Kazuo Shii, who has been chair of the JCP for 23 years, and top party officials were the subject of a recent attack by a former JCP member who criticized the way party leaders decide the chair. Former JCP member Nobuyuki Matsutake called for all members to have a direct vote in the matter. The attack on how the JCP selects its leader came as all political parties are looking to improve their standing with the public in advance of a possible snap election. Please join FCCJ as Shii speaks on the party's diplomatic initiatives and its internal dissent.
