Kenji Utsunomiya, Tokyo Gubernatorial Candidate

(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation)

Tokyo Gubernatorial Candidate

Kenji Utsunomiya travelled an unusual road to his candidacy for Tokyo governor. He was born and raised in a farming family in remote Ehime Prefecture and later Oita Prefecture. His family survived and prospered only through hard work, and through perseverance the young Utsunomiya entered the super-elite Tokyo University Law School in 1968.

His long career has been marked by a deep concern for social justice and defending the downtrodden. From 2010 to 2011, he was the head of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations.

In 2012, Utsunomiya made his first run at the office of Tokyo governor with the backing of several liberal-left political parties. He emerged as runner-up to Naoki Inose, but the margin was a very wide one. Two years later, he made another run at the position, this time losing to Yoichi Masuzoe.

As Tokyo tentatively emerges from its state of emergency, Kenji Utsunomiya is once again throwing his hat into the ring, contesting incumbent governor Yuriko Koike. Come and hear from a man who calls with a powerful and credible voice for the interests of the weak and needy to be protected.
