Japan's Current COVID-19 Outbreak: What's the cause? What's the solution?

On Saturday, Japan reported over 12,000 new cases of COVID-19, with Tokyo confirming more than 4,000 cases. Both figures were new daily records, and authorities believe the highly infectious Delta variant is tearing through Japan's population much as it is surging throughout the world. Japan decided to extend the state of emergency already imposed on Tokyo to Chiba, Kanagawa, Saitama and Osaka prefectures and to keep the restrictions in place though the end of August. Is there a connection to the Olympics? What is the likely course of the outbreak? Can it be contained?

The FCCJ has asked Dr. Koji Wada to come to the club to discuss these questions. A professor of public health at the International University of Health and Welfare, Dr. Wada has had a distinguished international career, having served as an advisor in Vietnam, Myanmar and the Congo. Dr. Wada has authored numerous scientific publications, including a risk assessment of infectious diseases for Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games that was published in 2018. Although that was well before the pandemic, the study gave Dr. Wada insights into the challenges of handling infectious diseases during international sporting events.
