What’s Next for Japanese Politics?
Almost a year ago, Liberal Democratic Party Rep. Kono Taro, who has held multiple Cabinet posts in a multi-decade political career, raised his hand after Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s resignation to become head of the party and ultimately, prime minister. He was unsuccessful, and Shigeru Ishiba captured both posts. Now, after a second ruling coalition thumping since his taking office, there are growing calls within the LDP for Ishiba to step down –partially to deal with the Trump tariffs--even as some are urging him to fight on. For now, the premier says he’s staying. But it’s not clear who would, or could, succeed him, first as LDP president and then as prime minister in a parliament now with greater control of the opposition parties.

What’s next for Japanese politics? Will the U.S. trade deal be Ishiba’s swan song?  To learn what’s happening in Nagatacho and within the LDP, the FCCJ will again welcome Rep. Kono, and learn what’s happening and will the veteran politician have another chance to lead the party – and Japan.
