PRESS CONFERENCE

"Caught between the Olympics and the Pandemic"
Yuji Kuroiwa, Governor of Kanagawa

17:00-17:45 Friday, July 30, 2021
(The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation / Speaker will join the event online.)

As in much of Japan, yet another COVID wave is washing over Kanagawa Prefecture. New daily COVID-19 cases in Tokyo's neighbor to the south dropped to fewer than 200 on June 24 but have since increased dramatically, hitting 652 on July 23, the day of the opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Kanagawa Prefecture Governor Yuji Kuroiwa asked Kanagawa residents to enjoy watching the games at home with family members, rather than gathering at sports bars or friends' houses. Kuroiwa is coming to the FCCJ to discuss how Kanagawa has coped with COVID-19, the challenges for Japan in holding the Olympic Games during a pandemic (Kanagawa is hosting four Olympic events--sailing, football, baseball/softball and road cycling), and the prefecture's plans for restoring normality.

Kuroiwa graduated from Waseda University's Faculty of Political Science and Economics and joined Fuji Television in 1980. After a stint in the sales department, he became a news reporter and worked his way up the ladder to anchor Fuji's "FNN Super Time" newscast in 1988. In 2009 he retired from Fuji and became a professor at the Graduate School of International University of Health and Welfare and then was elected governor of Kanagawa Prefecture in April 2011. He is now in his third term.
