PRESS CONFERENCE
"Former Malaysia PM Mahathir Moots New Government Model"

Mahathir bin Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia

May 24, Wednesday, 11:00-12:00 (Press Conference)
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003 and then again from 2018 to 2020, is one of Asia's most prominent veteran politicians.

Now 97 years old, Dr M, as he is often referred to, is not content with a quiet retirement after he was ousted from Parliament in the 2022 General Election. The opinionated, towering Malaysian figure is known for speaking his mind, and will come to the Club during his visit to Tokyo to propose a new model of government.

The global population has reached 8 billion people, and Dr M believes the existing model, with power concentrated in a handful of wealthy countries, is flawed.

Back home, he is suing the incumbent Prime Minister, Dr M's former protege Anwar Ibrahim, for defamation over "slanderous" claims that he and his family had amassed riches while he was in power. This is the latest chapter in Malaysian politics that have, for decades, been defined by a feud between the two politicians. Dr M had sacked Anwar as his deputy in 1998, and later had him jailed for corruption and sodomy.

Don't miss this chance to hear what Dr M has to say.
