PRESS CONFERENCE

Nobuyuki Matsutake, Former member of Japanese Communist Party (JCP)

15:00-16:00 Monday, February 27, 2023
(The speech will be in English and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.)

Japan's Communist Rebel Speaks Out

The Japanese Communist Party is the oldest currently active political party in the nation, but has never held an open election for its leadership. Party stalwart Nobuyuki Matsutake wanted to change that, calling for a vote and saying he would run against Kazuo Shii, who has led the group since 2000.

For his unprecedented challenge, Matsutake's demands were ignored and he was expelled. Now a publisher in Kyoto, he is calling for reforms of the JCP and his reinstatement as a member.

Matsutake will talk about why he wanted to run against Shii, why open elections are necessary, and what changes are needed to make the JCP a modern political force.
