Nuclear Power vs Renewables: World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2024

Mycle Schneider, Independent Energy and Nuclear Policy Analyst, Paris
Tatsujiro Suzuki, Professor, Research Center for Nuclear Weapons Abolition, Nagasaki University (RECNA)

14:00-15:00 Thursday, November 14, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English

Last month, the operator of the Takahama nuclear power plant received permission from the Nuclear Regulation Authority to operate unit 1 – Japan's oldest operating reactor – beyond 50 years. Although Japan’s nuclear industry has not recovered from the 2011 Fukushima accident, the NRA has still approved the restart of 13 reactors. On October 29, reactor 2 at the Onagawa plant in Miyagi Prefecture was brought back online for the first time since the Fukushima disaster.

A timely moment then for the annual World Nuclear Industry Status Report, which surveys the state of the industry worldwide. The report assesses the status of programs in countries such as Japan that have a long-established nuclear industry, as well as potential newcomers and technologies such as small modular reactors. It includes a special focus on renewable energy deployment and assesses how solar/wind and other renewables are putting increasing competitive pressures on the nuclear sector.

"The Fukushima Status Report provides an overview of ongoing onsite/offsite challenges of the 2011 disaster. The Decommissioning Status Report looks at the current situation of the now over 200 closed nuclear power reactors." Mycle Schneider and Tatsujiro Suzuki are long-established experts in the field.
