"Problems in Japan's Technical Intern Program"

Speech and Q&A will be in Japanese, Chinese with English interpretation.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is trying to lure up to 340,000 foreign workers over the next five years to boost Japan's shrinking labor force.

While Abe's plans are controversial – some conservatives in his ruling Liberal Democratic Party are against any kind of immigration policy – the need to boost the workforce is undeniable. But with a recent Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry showing that 125 foreign workers lost their lives in industrial accidents over the past decade, it is clear that measures need to be taken to protect the wellbeing of those coming to Japan.

Syoichi Ibusuki, a lawyer who represents foreign students and so-called technical interns in Japan, will come to the Club to speak about the mistreatment of some overseas workers. He has said that there have been cases in which employers have tried to conceal industrial accidents when affected families lacked Japanese language skills or understanding of the compensation system.

Eng Pisey, a Cambodian technical intern and Ko Seigo a Chinese technical intern, will accompany Ibusuki.
