PRESS CONFERENCE
"Propelling Japan's Stock Market Revival"
Hiromi Yamaji, Group CEO, Japan Exchange Group, Inc.
11:00-12:00 Tuesday, July 14, 2026
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.
After three decades of declines and stagnation, Japan's stock markets have come roaring back to life. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Index continues to chart historic highs in a turnaround triggered by reforms to company governance that have favored investors.
To explain the next steps in powering Japan's stock market revival, the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan will host a press conference by Hiromi Yamaji, CEO of the Japan Exchange Group, the company that runs Japan's major stock markets.
The group has played a leading role in ushering in this era of more buoyant equities by imposing new rules that force companies to improve returns or risk being demoted or delisted. The changes have amplified the voices of stockholders, and particularly large institutional investors like pension and hedge fund managers, at the expense of other traditional stakeholders, including employees.
The results have been dramatic, with the benchmark index surpassing the peaks of the 1980s financial bubble. This month, it rocketed to another record, touching 70,000 after surging 10,000 points in a mere seven weeks.
Yamaji will speak to us as Japan begins its annual shareholder meeting season, when activist investors are expected to make their voices heard. Please join us as he shares his plans for instilling even more dynamism and discipline in Japanese boardrooms.
