PRESS CONFERENCE

Japan-Korean Relations and the Kishida-Yoon Summit

Rui Matsukawa, Senator, Liberal Democratic Party

11:00-12:00 Thursday, March 16, 2023
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol arrives in Tokyo Thursday to meet Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The visit comes following Yoon's announcement that the South Korean government will raise local private funding to compensate elderly Korean former laborers who were forced to work for Japanese corporations during Japan's wartime rule. Tokyo and Seoul are hailing the agreement as a major breakthrough that will help mend relations, and 57 percent of the Japanese public approves of it, according to a recent poll. But a separate poll last week in South Korea showed nearly 60 percent oppose the Yoon agreement, suggesting the issue could continue to create problems between the two countries.

Please join as us Rui Matsukawa, deputy director of the Liberal Democratic Party's international bureau, reviews the agreement, looks at the agenda of the Kishida-Yoon summit, and offers her party's position on the issues that will be discussed, the summit's likely outcome, and the road ahead for both countries.
