PRESS CONFERENCE

“Nippon Ishin’s Policy Priorities and Summer Election Strategy"
Seiji Maehara, Co-President Nippon Ishin ( Japan Innovation Party )

9:00-10:00 Thursday, June 19, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

The Osaka- and Kansai-centric Nippon Ishin no Kai, also known as the Japan Innovation Party, is among the country’s most prominent opposition parties. But it has worked with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s minority government to pass the 2025 fiscal year budget, among other legislative bills. The end of the ordinary Diet session this month coincides with a key Tokyo metropolitan assembly race on June 22 ahead of a crucial Upper House election in July, as speculation continues to linger over whether Mr Ishiba might dissolve Parliament for a snap Lower House poll.

The Nippon Ishin continues to face scrutiny over how it will fare in the upcoming electoral contests, and whether it can grow and cement its reach beyond its Kansai home base. What are Nippon Ishin’s targets for the summer polls? How will it differentiate itself within a crowded field of opposition parties? And how does it intend to approach policy issues, either working with the ruling government or with the opposition camp?

Nippon Ishin’s Co-President and veteran 11-term MP Seiji Maehara, who is a Lower House lawmaker elected from the Kyoto No 2 district, will address the FCCJ on these issues.
