Women have long had to put up with sexual harassment in the workplace but technology has added another dangerous twist. Job-hunting apps expose women to one-to-one meetings with male employees, putting them at risk of harassment and assault. Businesses and universities have been alarmed by a steep rise in reports from women of sexual assault during job searches. The problem briefly made the headlines in March when an employee with a major trading house was arrested on suspicion of raping a job-hunting student after he plied her with drink.
In October, the labor ministry issued basic guidelines for companies to prevent power harassment in the workplaces, but these guidelines do not cover students looking for work. Professor Mari Miura of Sophia University, Professor Kaori Hayashi of the University of Tokyo and a group of students from some of Japan's top higher-education institutions are demanding that the government, companies and universities do more to prevent violence and sexual harassment against job-hunting students.
They say that the reports are only the tip of the iceberg because many women do not report assaults.
