PRESS CONFERENCE
Peter Heidt, Head of the delegation and the member of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Bundestag

13:00-14:00, Friday, October 28, 2022
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

Systemic Competition, Human Rights & the New World Order – the German view

Human rights issues are taking center stage in a growing number of Western governments and corporations. Relations with China and the oppression of Uighurs in Xinjiang are increasingly being framed more along these lines. Even Japan and South Korea, which rarely spoke openly about human rights issues in the past, are starting to criticize China, their largest trading partner, on these issues.

Another export-oriented country attempting to strike a balance between human rights and trade is Germany. An important step towards achieving this will be the upcoming visit to China by Chancellor Olaf Scholz. He will be the first foreign leader to visit Chinese leader Xi Jinping following the latter's securing a third term of office. Please join FCCJ as we welcome the German parliamentary delegation of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid to learn about Germany's plans to incorporate human rights issues into its policies, and what the delegation has learned on its visit to Japan.

Peter Heidt, the head of the delegation and a member of the coalition partner Free Democratic Party, will join the event with five colleagues. Prior to coming to Japan, the group will visit Taiwan.
