The election for governor of Tokyo on July 5th might appear to be a one-horse race: the incumbent, Yuriko Koike, is enjoying a burst of popularity largely because of the city's success in bringing the covid-19 virus under control. Yet, the race is not in the bag yet. Koike has come under renewed scrutiny over claims that she did not graduate from Cairo University in Egypt. Her imperious style of governing is not to everyone's taste either.

Among the candidates hoping to make a dent in Koike's armor is Taisuke Ono. A former vice governor of Kumamoto prefecture, Ono is backed by the Japan Innovation Party and is running on a platform geared to helping businesses hit by the pandemic. Ono worked in private business before building a career in politics, starting as a policy adviser to the Kumamoto government in 2012. He wants more discussion on "what sort of city Tokyo should become."

Whoever wins will have to deal with threats of a second wave of corona infections, and the fallout from the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which many believe may never happen. It remains to be seen whether Ono's relative youth (46) and energy will be an asset or liability in the campaign against his older but far more politically experienced opponent.
