In a landmark decision Tuesday, the Tokyo District Court ordered the dissolution of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, the former Unification Church.
The church's activities became a major issue following the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in July 2022. His alleged killer claimed resentment toward the group, blaming it for his family's financial ruin. The controversy also exposed long-standing ties between the church and Japanese politicians, particularly within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), leading to public outcry and the dissolution of most of the party’s political factions.
The religious group has defended its practices, arguing that receiving donations is part of its religious activities and that it has ceased misleading recruitment tactics.
Tomihiro Tanaka, the president of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, will come to the FCCJ to discuss the ruling.
