PRESS CONFERENCE
Labor's Influence on the Takaichi Administration
Tomoko Yoshino, President of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC-RENGO)
11:00-12:00 Friday, December 12, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
The Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan is pleased to host Tomoko Yoshino, president of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, better known as Rengo. She is the first woman to lead Japan's most powerful labor organization -- which boasts around 7 million members -- and will speak about Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Japan's first female prime minister, and the future of her administration.
Rengo has long been an influential voice in the nation's politics. Yoshino has used her position recently to speak about what might be the single most decisive issue to Japan's voters: the rising price of food, housing, and other daily essentials. While Takaichi is currently riding high in media polls over of her strong stand on Taiwan, voters are more likely to prioritize economic issues when the next election rolls around, which some reports indicate might be as early as next year.
Rengo has traditionally aligned with opposition parties. But with Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party now holding onto power as a minority party, the political influence of Rengo's large bloc of voters is expected to rise further.
Please join us to hear from one of Japan's most influential political voices.
