11:00-12:00 Thursday, September 7, 2023
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.

Will solar power prove to be the dream ticket for producing cheap, clean energy?

Solar energy is one of the most important non-carbon-generating sustainable energy sources being developed to combat climate change. A view from Google maps can show how extensively it has been implemented in many countries around the world. And solar energy has improved markedly over recent years in efficiency, cost and accessibility.

At the same time, solar-cell-generated power faces many challenges, such as intermittency – the sun only shines during the daytime and cloudy weather can reduce or eliminate energy collection, leaving gaps in the power supply. More effort is needed for cost-effective, technically feasible storage of power collected during peak hours. There are also other issues, which include: environmental concerns related to the extensive land area required to host power-generating panels; waste from solar-cell production; power-grid issues such as transmission from potential high-power collection areas like the Sahara; and the concentration of solar-cell manufacture in only one country.

The speakers will come to address the issues surrounding solar power and how it might develop in the future.
