PRESS CONFERENCE
"Accidents at Japan's daycare centers"
Ai Yamaguchi & Makoto Yamaguchi (pseudonym), Parents of Emiri Yamaguchi
Akira Senju, Lawyer & Hiroko Inokuma, Journalist

July 10, Monday 15:00-16:00 (Press Conference)
The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation

Cases of abuse and neglect, sometimes leading to death, at Japan's daycare centers have caused widespread concern in the past couple of years, even as the country seeks to broaden childcare provision to encourage more young people to start families and tackle its demographic woes. Last year, more than 1,300 cases of "inappropriate care" were discovered around the country, with about 120 of them defined as abuse. A couple who lost their nine-month-old daughter Emiri in one such heartbreaking incident will join us, along with their lawyer and an expert on childcare issues, to discuss the responsibility of the local government to guarantee proper care, and how such problems can be prevented in future.
