The Kishida Administration and the Autumn Diet Session
The Diet session that kicks off October 20th will see Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's government push for an economic stimulus package to deal with rising prices, even as debate intensifies on how to pay for a controversial defense spending increase and new child welfare policy. Despite reshuffling the Cabinet and making changes to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's leadership last month, Kishida's popularity ratings continue to lag. Two key by elections on October 22 could also influence whether he decides to call a general election before the end of this year,
Former LDP Secretary General and Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba has been a trenchant critic of the Kishida administration, especially the way it pushed for a defense spending increase. Ishiba's political experience, as well as his expertise on defense issues and his public popularity, keep speculation alive about his chances to succeed Kishida. Please join us as Ishiba, a regular visitor to FCCJ, talks about the current political situation, what's ahead for Diet discussions, and the timing of a possible snap election.

To attend this event, the dinner charge for members is 3,500 yen (+ tax) and for non-members 4,500 yen (+ tax) and registration/cancellation deadlines are at noon on October 10, Tuesday. Reservations and cancellations are not complete without confirmation. Please note dinner will not be served after the speech begins and working journalists and student members can attend the event after the meal service for free.
