"Japan-China Power Politics"

With events moving rapidly on the Korean Peninsula, China is already taking credit for its part in brokering peace. The ink had barely dried on the agreement between President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, before Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi heralded his country's "indisputable" role in the summit.

Some pundits say China is the biggest winner from the Singapore meeting. The removal of American troops from Korean soil and the weakening of US influence in East Asia would be a major win for Beijing. Trump's proposal to end war games on the peninsula in return for good-faith negotiations on denuclearization is essentially the same as China's "freeze-for-freeze" proposal.

Time to take a deep look at China's strategic goals in Asia, and the country's troubled relationship with Japan. Despite signs of détente, tensions ripple beneath the surface of China-Japan relations. Though Japan has somewhat softened its stance toward the One Belt One Road initiative, it remains deeply suspicious of China's aims, and its power grab in the East and South China seas. Both governments are investing heavily in information campaigns and propaganda.

Dr. Giulio Pugliese is ideally placed to discuss these issues. He is a lecturer in war studies at King's College London. He specializes in the politics, both domestic and international, of the Asia-Pacific region, with a focus on Japan, China and the United States. His co-authored book -"Sino-Japanese Power Politics: Might, Money and Minds" - will soon be released in Korean. He previously worked at the Mitsubishi Research Institute, writing on arms exports for a study commissioned by Japan's Ministry of Economics Trade and Industry.
