Co-Authors of “The Nuclear Zero Proposal by Koizumi, Koike is Fake”

Despite its seemingly inflammatory title, Kaneko and his two collaborators have set out on the seemingly difficult task of not just reviving confidence in nuclear energy generation but also in the highly expensive and much criticized nuclear re-processing plant at Rokkasho in northern Japan.

They insist that despite, or even due to, the Fukushima disaster Japan will remain heavily dependent on imported fuel, including coal even by 2030 renewables will supply only 22-24% of Japan’s energy needs (with much coming from dams). Some 22-20% will still have to come from nuclear plants, for both cost and anti-pollution reasons.

In much of the rest of the world, China especially and even in England, nuclear will progress. It could do so in Japan with more care in site location. The remarkable (but much overlooked) survival of the Onagawa plant, buildings intact, even though closer to the earthquake epicenter, is notable. Fukushima could have done likewise if it had not ignored tsunami data. Kaneko, with his Foreign Ministry background, suggests that the disputed Northern Territories near Hokkaido could be the site of a joint Japan-Russia nuclear plant.

Koizumi and Koike are criticized for jumping on the anti-nuclear bandwagon simply for vote-catching reasons. Neither had made criticisms pre 3-11.

Agree with the speakers or not, their book (in Japanese only) does provide much material for pro-nuclear advocates, and no doubt much to be criticised by the anti-nuclear school.
