Money: Dispelling the Myths and Misunderstandings
Paul Sheard, an Australian-American economist, is the author of the recently-released Wall Street Journal bestselling business book, The Power of Money: How Governments and Banks Create Money and Help Us All Prosper (Matt Holt imprint of BenBella Books). He is a former Vice Chairman of S&P Global and a former Senior Fellow and Research Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School.
Money makes the economic world go around, but misunderstandings about it abound says Sheard, who is well known for his ability to explain complex economic concepts clearly.
He will speak to the themes in his new book, focusing particularly on the implications for Japan. Among other topics, he will explain the interrelated roles of commercial banks, the government, and the central bank in creating money, why the government doesn't really need to repay its debt, how to think about QE (quantitative easing), and why crypto currencies will disrupt, but not replace, the sovereign monetary system. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with one of the world's leading economic thinkers.
Sheard held chief economist positions at S&P Global, Standard & Poor's Rating Services, Nomura Securities, and Lehman Brothers and was Japan Strategist and Head of Japanese Investments at Baring Asset Management. He was Lecturer in Economics at the Australian National University and Associate Professor of Economics at Osaka University, and held visiting positions at Stanford University and the Bank of Japan.
Sheard has a Master of Economics and PhD from the ANU. In 2019, his alma mater, Monash University, conferred on him an honorary Doctor of Laws.
