PROFESSIONAL LUNCHEON
What are Japan's Choices in the New Trump Era?
Kazuto Suzuki, Professor at the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo & Director of the Institute of Geoeconomics at International House of Japan
Ken Jimbo, Professor, Faculty of Policy Management Keio University & Managing Director, International House of Japan

12:00-13:30 Monday, May 26, 2025
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.

In the first 100 days of his return to the White House, U.S. President Donald Trump has shaken and threatened to topple the two pillars of Japan's post-1945 prosperity, the liberal free-trade order and the security alliance with the U.S. As the assumptions that defined Japan's policies for the past 80 years now crumble, the nation must find a new way forward. What are the choices that the nation faces, and how can Japan respond to not only a less-reliable U.S. but also an increasingly assertive China next door?

To discuss Japan's constraints and potential responses, the Club is pleased to welcome two of the nation's leading policy thinkers. In addition to heading prominent think tanks, both speakers have served as advisors to the national government and hold professorships at top universities. Please join us for what promises to be an insightful and informative professional luncheon.
