"President Trump's visit and its implications for Japan & the Asia region"
Language:The speech and Q & A will be in English
The FCCJ is inviting Brad Glosserman, a senior adviser of the Pacific Forum CSIS and a visiting professor at the Center for Rule Making Strategies at Tama University, to talk about U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Asia in November. It will be Mr. Trump’s first trip to Asia since he became president in January. Glosserman will discuss how the visit could impact and reshape political dynamics in the Asian region.
President Trump’s trip is aimed at consolidating support for a hard line against North Korea. Tensions have been escalating between the U.S. and the hermit nation led by Kim Jong Un. North Korea continues to provoke the international community by launching intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) that could reach the U.S. mainland, and conducting nuclear tests.
Trump is expected to give his speech on U.S. policy on the North to the National Assembly in South Korea. He is scheduled to meet relatives of Japanese abductees by North Korea.
Trade will also be a big issue. While former U.S. President Barack Obama emphasized a greater economic and diplomatic partnership with Asian countries through his Asia rebalancing policy, Trump has already pulled the U.S. from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact. He is criticizing Asian countries for trade imbalances, especially China. His trip could include talks on a U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement, which the two countries have already agreed to review, and spur a potential free trade pact with Japan.
Another focus will be how Trump will build rapport with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the heels of Xi’s consolidation of power at the 19th Communist Party Congress in late October. Xi has become ever more powerful, without any potential successors on the seven-man Politburo Standing Committee. Xi could be signaling that he will not relinquish power at the next congress in 2022.
