ROUND TABLE

H.E. Mr. Mukhsinkhuja Abdurakhmonov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan to Japan

11:00-12:00 Wednesday, June 8, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Uzbekistan's reform-minded government is celebrating the lifting of a 13-year boycott of its vital cotton exports. The end of the boycott, imposed because the country was accused of using forced labor to harvest the crop, opens America and other global markets to Uzbekistan cotton

Uzbekistan says it is also working to strengthen cooperation with Central Asian countries in trade, economic and industrial relations. But there is growing concern about the situation in neighboring Afghanistan, where the Taliban has returned to power. And Uzbekistan has to navigate complicated foreign relations with other major powers, notably Russia and China. Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was quick to express his country's "understanding" of Vladimir Putin "military operation" in Ukraine. Uzbekistan also supports the "one China" principle, and regards issues related to Xinjiang and Hong Kong as internal Chinese affairs. Uzbekistan attaches great importance to China's "Belt and Road" initiative, and the two sides are accelerating joint construction of related infrastructure.

To shed more light on this part of the world and the alliances that are reshaping it, we have invited the ambassador of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, to explain his country's polices, goals and concerns and how Japan is viewed in terms of its economic, financial and technological might.
