Set in the turbulent last years of the Tokugawa Shogunate this exciting drama tells the story of Otose, the landlady of the Teradaya Inn in Fushimi, near Kyoto, who played a significant role in the events of those often violent days.
Married to Isuke, the inn keeper, who preferred Joruri music performances to inn-keeping, Otose ran the business herself. She thus became close to many of the young activist samurai from the Satsuma-han who were in Kyoto – then a hotbed of intrigue – waiting for the opportunity to strike a blow to bring about a change of government. Her relationship with these young men was that of elder sister. They all loved and respected her, especially after the “Teradaya Incident”, when Satsuma moderates and radicals fought each other over their beliefs.
One day a young ronin, or masterless samurai, Sakamoto Ryoma, appeared on the scene and asked Otose to care for his patron’s daughter, whom he would later marry.
This unique production has been created by Efu Wakagi and is based on Ryutaro Shiba’s novel, “Ryoma ga yuku” and “Hotaru” (Firefly) by Sakunosuke Oda.
It stars Hitomi Kuroki, a former top female troupe star of the all-girl Takarazuka Revue.
