Special Ukiyo-e Talk Show

In conjunction with the club's upcoming Ukiyo-e exhibit, on July 10, the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan will host a very special Ukiyo-e talk show featuring Kentaro Makino, a popular, well-known Ukiyo-e expert commentator. This event will be one of 2025's biggest highlights!
As a former NHK producer, Mr Makino led a groundbreaking project to digitize the world's bestpreserved Ukiyo-e collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston over 10 years ago. Now, using digital images, he captivates audiences around the world with his detailed observations, abundant knowledge, and humorous anecdotes. Ukiyo-e greatly influenced Art Nouveau as well as the Impressionism Movement of the late 19th
Century, most notably the works of Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh.
Although the FCCJ is a members-only club, non-members are also welcome! For the month of July, we will be exhibiting Ukiyo-e prints on 'washi' rice paper meticulously created using a unique dyeing process by Shunichi Kida, a pre-eminent graphic artist. Please come and enjoy the large Ukiyo-e prints, highlighted by one full-wall sized print, and join us as we wander back in time to the Edo period, absorbed in the fascinating stories of Mr. Makino, the man who sparked the recent Ukiyo-e boom!

English Interpretation: So as not to interfere with the flow of the Ukiyo-e discussion in Japanese, partial English interpretation will be offered that will enable listeners to grasp an understanding and appreciation of the depth and wonder of Ukiyo-e.

浮世絵エキスパート牧野 健太郎氏を迎えての特別なトークショー

現在、人気沸騰中の江戸時代の庶民文化・浮世絵。新しいデジタル技術を活かしたイマーシブなイベント、プロジェクション・マッピングと、様々なスタイルで鑑賞されていますが、当時制作された浮世絵はそれほど大きなものではありませんでした。
しかし、和紙にプリントとする木田の画期的な技術で大きく引き伸ばされたおかげで、絵のみでなく、彫り・刷りの技術の妙もはっきりと見る事ができます。
「染め擦りアーティスト」として国内外で活躍する木田俊⼀氏は、アートプロデューサーとして、国内外の美術館や華やかなイベントステージ、空港ロビーやホテルロビーのインスタレーションも行っています。
FCCJ のギャラリーのために、特別に制作された「浮世絵」をたっぷりと御鑑賞ください。
