Tom Brown Memorial Night
6:30 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2022
Dear Members,
With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our dear friend and longtime FCCJ member, Tom Brown, on October 7th.
Many of you may remember Tom Brown as the familiar face at the Open Table, where he held court for nearly 30 years as chief convener of an FCCJ tradition which made sure anyone who walked into the Main Bar not knowing a soul would be welcomed. A truly unique and eclectic circle, Tokyo's would-be answer to the fabled Algonquin Hotel's Round Table in NY, was an instant home to countless FCCJ initiates, many of whom were first walked across the bar floor by Hanif for an introduction to the Keepers of the Table.
Tom first arrived in Tokyo in 1972, making this the 50th Anniversary of his landing. After a few years back in the US, then a stint in Korea, he returned as head of Westinghouse and joined the FCCJ in 1989. Tom immediately found his place at the table which drew an exceptionally eclectic crowd, and through them, was enticed into serving various FCCJ committee posts, most notably on the Membership Marketing, for which he was an outstanding new members recruiter, along with F&B, which became both a hobby and a passion, leading him to co-found the Tokyo Couples Club, a dining society made up primarily of Open Table friends, who would take on revolving roles to host memorable evenings at unique and delicious eateries, with the overriding condition being exceptional value with a fixed price cap. Many such outings would go on to inspire something new for the FCCJ menu and special events.
Please join Tom's wife, Mieko, in giving Tom a befitting sayonara after a long and eventful membership he enjoyed at the Foreign Correspondents' Club.
Light refreshments, including his favorite wines, will be served.
