With a focus on disaster recovery efforts after the earthquake and tsunami of 2011, this collection of images highlights how Japan’s Emperor and Empress console, sympathize with and show support for natural disaster survivors.

Visits by the Their Majesties to affected area are linked to a lasting impact in generating hope among survivors and building community resilience, say disaster research experts.

Japan is one of the world’s most disaster-prone countries and strengthening protective measures to reduce property loss and human life are top government agendas. As part of current policy measures, billions of dollars are spent on earthquake and tsunami prediction measures, disaster management and recovery. But more needs to be done.

Response to the March 11, 2011 triple disaster that devastated swathes of the Tohoku region’s coastal areas and led to the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown is a landmark in lesson-learning in Japan’s disaster management policy. In addition, the recent January 1st 2024 Noto peninsula earthquake is another important milestone in the study of timely and people-led relief and recovery.

Recovery experts and volunteers attending the exhibition reception will address these topics and look forward to a lively Q&A session. They are invited by a non-Imperial Household Agency affiliated NPO Japan Disaster Recovery (JDR) Support Organization, an Osaka-based volunteer organization providing relief in disaster affected areas since 2011. https://www.npo-jdr.org/
