Louis Armstrong: Satchmo’s Spirit Lives on Forever is the story of respected jazz musician Louis Armstrong and the musicians Yoshio and Keiko Toyama, who fell in love with his music. So much so that they moved to Louisiana to be close to the home of Satchmo, the nickname given to the world-famous musician. 

Their book was published in 2021 in Japanese by Tosei-sha (冬青社). The co-authors will talk about their love of jazz and Satchmo, their jazz experiences for more than a half century and the secret of the deep popularity of jazz in Japan. They will also play some swinging jazz of Satchmo (and Disney) during this Book Break.

Driven by their admiration of Jazz and Satchmo since they were teenagers, the couple took an immigrant ship to New Orleans in 1967 and lived in Satchmo’s neighborhood for five years, studying with jazz pioneers. Yoshio is now known in New Orleans as “the Satchmo of Japan” for his ability to imitate Armstrong’s voice and tone.

He and Keiko, a piano and banjo player, have been playing Satchmo and New Orleans’ music for over half a century in Japan, including 23 years at New Orleans Square in Tokyo Disneyland. Their latest CD was just released in August.

Doors open at 6:00 pm. Dinner is served from 6:10 pm. The presentation starts from 7:00 pm.

Menu: Salad/ Duck Thigh Confit with Marron Cognac Sauce/ Berry and Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce with One Drink. Book Break charges are 3,000 yen/ 4,000 yen (members/ non-members) per person.

FCCJ members can sign up at the reception desk. Reservations cancelled less than 72 hours in advance will be charged in full.

Non-members can reserve at the reception desk by email (front@fccj.or.jp). Payment is in advance till Friday, October 8th, 2021. No refund is available unless the event is cancelled by FCCJ.

「ルイ・アームストロング　生誕１２０年　没５０年に捧ぐ」(２０２１年、冬青社)は、ジャズの巨匠アームストロングとその音楽を愛してやまないジャズ・ミュージシャン、外山喜雄・恵子夫妻の物語である。「サッチモ」（アームストロングの愛称）に憧れるあまり、二人は、サッチモの故郷ニューオーリンズがあるルイジアナ州に移住を決意した。

Book Breakでは、共著者である二人が、ジャズとサッチモへの熱い想いを語るとともに、半世紀以上にわたるジャズ・ミュージシャンの経験、そして日本におけるジャズの奥深い人気の秘密について解説する。サッチモのスイングジャズ（そしてディスニー楽曲）のバンド演奏も予定されている。

１０代の頃からジャズとサッチモに憧れた二人は、１９６７年、移民船でニューオーリンズに渡った。それから５年間、地元のパイオニアたちからジャズの手ほどきを受け、喜雄は、アームストロングそっくりの声色と調子から、ニューオーリンズで「日本のサッチモ」として知られる。日本では、恵子（ピアノ、バンジョー奏者）とともに、半世紀以上にわたり、サッチモとニューオーリンズの音楽を演奏。そのうちの２３年間は、東京ディズニーランドのニューオーリンズ・スクエアで演奏してきた。今年８月に、最新アルバム（ＣＤ）をリリースしたばかりである。
