PRESS CONFERENCE

How avatars will change society

Hiroshi Ishiguro, Professor of Osaka University (Honorary Professor)
MOONSHOT Project Manager

14:30-15:30 Friday, January 27, 2022
(The speech and Q & A will be in English.)

Hiroshi Ishiguro gained international notoriety for his development of human-like robots, or androids, crafted to closely resemble living people. He modeled his Geminoid android on himself. His objective has been to study how humans will interact socially with robots of the future and to explore fundamental philosophical questions about the nature of humanity.

Ishiguro, an Osaka University professor, is now putting this background to work as project manager of an effort to realize an avatar-symbiotic society by 2050, one of Japan's generously funded Moonshot programs. He will discuss how avatars could change the future of society, give some examples of how avatars could be used, introduce an avatar he is developing for use on business occasions, and describe the role avatars will play in the World Expo 2025 to be held in Osaka.
