PRESS CONFERENCE
Protecting Mt. Fuji from Overtourism
Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi
15:00-16:00 Monday, June 17, 2024
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese with English interpretation.
Mt Fuji is facing a "looming crisis," says Yamanashi Prefecture governor Kotaro Nagasaki. With millions of visitors and tens of thousands of vehicles ascending the UNESCO World Heritage site each year, Mt Fuji has fallen victim to the environmental problems of overtourism. It risks losing the beauty and serenity that makes it a natural national treasure and a sacred place for many visitors. Governor Nagasaki will talk about the unprecedented steps the prefecture is taking from July 1 to protect the Mt. Fuji area, including the introduction of precedent-setting trail fees and a cap on visitor numbers. The governor will also offer his views on the controversial maglev shinkansen that will pass through the prefecture.
