PRESS CONFERENCE

Japan and the US Declaration of 'Genocide' against Rohingya
Zaw Min Htut, President, Burmese Rohingya Association in Japan (BRAJ)

15:00-16:00 Friday, March 25, 2022
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in English.
For weeks, the focus of the world's attention has been on refugees fleeing the carnage in Ukraine, so Myanmar's ethnic Rohingyas are increasingly becoming the forgotten refugees of our time. Almost a million Rohingyas are now stranded in refugee camps in Bangladesh. A new and welcome breakthrough has just been marked with the US State Department's official declaration that the Myanmar military regime committed genocide and crimes against humanity against Rohingyas. This might accelerate ongoing proceedings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, where Myanmar is fighting claims that it violated the Genocide Convention in Rakhine State - and perhaps pave the way for an early repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

However, many obstacles still remain before the Rohingya crisis is solved. Among them is the question of whether Japan and other countries with interests and investments in Myanmar are going to follow the US example. Will Tokyo now take a harder line on the Myanmar government or continue with business as usual? Here to discuss these issues is Zaw Min Htut, a Rohingya refugee who heads the Burmese Rohingya Association in Japan. He will take questions on the US State Dept. declaration and discuss what impact it might have on finding a durable solution to this long-standing refugee problem.
