PRESS CONFERENCE
Yasuhiro Yamashita, President of the Japanese Olympic Committee

13:00-14:00 Monday, June 28, 2021
Language: The speech and Q & A will be in Japanese and English with simultaneous interpretation.

Vaccinating athletes for a safe Olympics

With the Tokyo Olympics fast approaching, the appearance of our speaker Japanese Olympic Committee President Yasuhiro Yamashita could not be more newsworthy. Recent polls have shown the Japanese public are warming up to the Games, already delayed a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a sluggish start, Japan's vaccination effort is gaining steam, and a fourth wave of coronavirus cases appears to be ebbing.

Yamashita has said some 95% of athletes will be inoculated by the start of the event on July 23, further mitigating infection risks. Before rising to his leadership role with the JOC, he had a famous career in judo, winning a gold medal in the 1984 Olympics and serving as coach to Japan's national team at the 2000 Games.
