AMLC Panel Discussion: Asian Journalists in Japan

Asian journalists are an important component to the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan. Add the dimension of hailing from cities that are centers themselves for global news networks, and the roles they fill working in Tokyo become intriguing as much as vitally essential to covering the region. Come here firsthand what makes them tick, drives their investigative regimen, and why they chose Japan’s capital as their base of operations.
On the panel:
Suvendrini Kakuchi, moderator, is Tokyo correspondent for University World News in the UK, which focuses on global higher education. Her long career in Asia has covered education, the environment, gender, and ethnicity issues. She is a Nieman Fellow, Harvard University.
Foo Choo Wei is Singapore Lianhe Zaobao’s Tokyo Correspondent. Prior to that, she worked with the Chinese-language current affairs team with Singapore Broadcasting Corporation, Japanese educational publisher Gakken, and TBS Television.
Moynul Alam worked for many years as a freelance columnist for Bangladeshi media outlets and as a broadcaster for NHK World Japan’s Bengali service. In 2025, he joined Prothom Alo, Bangladesh’s leading national daily, as its Tokyo correspondent. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from Monash University, Australia.
Doors open at 18:30 with a casual “meet the panelists/cocktail time”. The panel begins at 19:00, followed by the Q&A session, ending promptly at 20:30.
