Salem's images preserve scenes of family life, local communities, and everyday activities in Gaza. In contrast, photos from the film reveal the devastation and human toll of the invasion through the work of four Palestinian AFP journalists who continue to report from the ground, despite the dangers.
Salem and the four photo-journalists are not only witnesses to the conflict but also people directly affected by it. Unable to return to his homeland, Salem continues to share his photographs of Gaza before the invasion, while the journalists continue to document the unfolding reality on the ground.
By presenting these two bodies of work side by side, the exhibition seeks to show what Gaza was, what has been lost, and what continues to unfold today geopolitically. It also invites us in Japan to reflect on a fundamental question: Are the people of Gaza really as far away from us as they may seem?
