"Meet the Press"

We are bringing back “Meet the Press,” an initiative designed to encourage more members of the press to come to the club and meet other members of the club. The first event will take place on June 26, and our guest speaker is Richard Lloyd Parry, Asia Editor of The Times.

Richard was born in north-west England, and has reported from thirty-two countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Myanmar, North Korea and Ukraine. He has lived in Tokyo since 1995.

In addition to reporting for The Times, Richard also contributes to the London Review of Books. His books include “In the Time of Madness,” an account of the fall of the Suharto regime in Indonesia and the liberation of East Timor. “People Who Eat Darkness” tells the true story of a young British woman who went missing in Japan in 2000, and the arrest and trial of the man accused of killing her. “Ghosts of the Tsunami” is an account of the disaster that struck north-east Japan in 2011, focusing on events at one elementary school. “In The Green Heart,” his first novel, will be published in August.

He has been named the UK’s Foreign Correspondent of the Year and has won the Japan National Press Club Awards Special Award and the Rathbones Folio Prize.

We will meet at the bar counter in the Main Bar for drinks from 6:00 and then proceed to the function room where dinner will be served from 6:30. Starting at 7:00 our guest will give a short presentation of his recent work, and regale us with tales of his experiences working as a journalist in Japan. There will be time for questions following the presentation.

Reservations cancelled after June 23 will be charged in full.
