Rapid Development of Renewables in Asia and Japan
Language: The speech and Q&A will be in English
With serious opposition rising to the restarting of Japan's nuclear power plants, the focus has turned to renewable energy such as solar and wind power. Japan currently produces around 10 percent of its power needs using renewable energy, well short of the government's target of 24 percent by 2030.
But renewables are taking hold. Solar-power farms are springing up all over the countryside and on new houses. Wind turbines are also being raised and geo-thermal power is another possible option for Japan.
To look at how Japan and the region are doing in the field of renewable energy, Christine Lins, Executive Secretary of REN21, the Renewable Energy Policy Network of the 21st Century, will come to the Club.
REN21 is aglobal, public-private, multi-stakeholder network on renewable energy, regrouping international organizations, governments, industry associations, science and academia as well as NGOs working in the field of renewable energy. REN21 has its headquarters at the United Nations Environment Programme in Paris.
Lins previously served as the Secretary General of the European Renewable Energy Council. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. Previously, she worked in a regional energy agency in Austria promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy sources.
