"Noise in the Sky: New Haneda Flight Routes"

As part of the Japanese government's goal to increase inbound tourist numbers to 40 million this year, the transportation ministry has been conducting low-altitude test flights on a new route over central Tokyo for passenger planes landing and taking off at Haneda Airport.

The test flights are conducted seven days a week on two different paths, which are expected to open on March 29. They are aimed at increasing the number of annual landings and takeoffs from the current 60,000 to as many as 99,000.

Since the beginning of test flights on January 30, Tokyo residents living under the new route have been complaining about the noise and raising safety concerns – some jumbo jets fly just 300 meters above densely populated areas such as Shibuya and Shinjuku.

A group of residents opposing the use of new flight paths have formed a group called Haneda Project. The group’s leader, Kiwami Omura, will visit the FCCJ to voice their concerns about noise pollution and the risk of ground casualties in event of an accident. Hiroshi Sugie, a former Japan Airlines pilot and a veteran aviation expert, will also come to speak.
