The micro-credit guru and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus in recent years has been busy exploring the potential of what he has coined "social business." The concept, which has become his signature brainchild these days, calls on the business community to get involved more seriously in business initiatives that would also help to solve social problems. He has so far been successful in attracting the attention of numerous corporate groups in across the globe.
The Social Business Research Center of Kyushu University functions as a launching pad for the spread social business in Japan. The Center has recently teamed up with Yoshimoto Kogyo, a leading Japanese entertainment group, to establish a joint venture social business company that would focus on addressing social issues in Japan through the innovative idea of mobilizing entertainers working under the guidance of Yoshimoto. The new company will aim to issues such as aging population, declining birthrate, poverty and depopulation of rural areas that Japan currently faces.
To announce the launch of the new company, Muhammad Yunus and Yuka Kobayashi, President of the "Yunus Yoshimoto Social Action", Ichiya Nakamura, Nobutaka Tsubota and Masataka Izumi, will address a press conference on March 28. Yoshimoto comediansYuriyan Retriever and Penguin Nuts will also join the press event to explain the initiative.
