The speakers: Martin Fackler, Bryan Dunn
The Club will welcome two Tokyo-based authors who are among the very few foreigners to write books in Japanese: One is Martin Fackler, the former Tokyo Bureau Chief of The New York Times, who has authored or co-authored eleven book in the Japanese language dealing with media in Japan and other topics. The other is Bryan Dunn, a Canadian lawyer with Anderson Mori & Tomotsune in Tokyo whose novel was recently published by Bungeisha, a love story unfolding in modern day Tokyo’s “shitamachi,” Kyoto, Kagoshima and British Columbia. The two will discuss the complexities of writing in the Japanese language and dealing with Japanese publishers.
Martin Fackler was born in Iowa, USA and holds degrees from Dartmouth College, the University of Illinois at Urbana and the University of California, Berkeley, and he studied at the University of Tokyo, Keio University in Tokyo and Tunghai University in Taiwan. Since becoming a journalist in 1996, he has worked at Bloomberg, the Associated Press, and The Wall Street Journal. From 2009 to 2015 and again from 2024 to 2025, he served as the Tokyo Bureau Chief of The New York Times. For his extensive coverage of the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011, he was named a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize. His books in Japanese language include the best-selling 「本当のこと」を伝えない日本の新聞 (Credibility Lost: The Crisis in Japanese Newspaper Journalism after Fukushima) (Futabasha, 2012).
Bryan Dunn currently works as an international lawyer at Anderson Mori &Tomotsune, one of Japan’s leading law firms. Born in Ontario, Canada, and raised in British Columbia, he entered the University of British Columbia after serving in the Army Reserve at the age of 16.After graduation, he worked for several years at a Japanese general trading company, after which he re-entered the university’s Faculty of Law, where he studied Japanese language and modern and classical literature and other subjects.After qualifying as a lawyer, he joined a major British law firm and worked in Tokyo. 枯楓の救い (Kofu no Sukui), his first novel, was published in Japanese by Bungeisha in 2025.
Doors open at 6:00 pm for a casual "Meet the Author" cocktail time. Dinner will be served from 6:30 pm and the talk begins at 7:15 pm.

Beverages can be purchased at the venue at just 550 yen per drink (non-members can purchase drink tickets at Reception). Online attendance (Zoom) is available by reservation at 550 yen per person.
