Join us on Friday, December 4 at 6 pm for a sneak preview of Takeshi Fukunaga’s captivating new documentary Ainu Puri. This intimate and visually stunning film offers a rare look at the daily lives and traditions of an Ainu family in Shiranuka, Hokkaido, through the story of Shigeki Amanai, who strives to live according to Ainu Puri (the Ainu way of life). As Shigeki passes down cultural practices like night salmon fishing to his son, Motoki, the film explores the challenges of preserving Ainu identity in contemporary Japan. Set against the breathtaking landscapes of Hokkaido, Ainu Puri vividly portrays the resilience and devotion of one family working to sustain their heritage while navigating the complexities of modern society. From the award-winning director of Ainu Mosir (2020) and Mountain Woman (2022), Ainu Puri continues Fukunaga’s exploration of marginalized communities and their untold stories. The director will be present for a Q&A session following the screening. (Ainu Puri, Japan, 2024, 82 minutes, in Japanese with English subtitles.)
