I moved back to Tokyo in 2023, when I retired as a Professor (2010 - 2023) at the Harvard Business School, where I started my academic career as an Assistant Professor (1976 to 1983). In between these two appointments in Boston, I worked at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, where I conducted research with the late Ikujiro Nonaka, co-authoring 16 publications, three of which are memorable — an article in the Harvard Business Review (The New New Product Development Game in 1986) and two Oxford University books — The Knowledge-Creating Company in 1995 and The Wise Company in 2019.
Both Jiro Nonaka and I received our MBA and Ph.D from the University of California, Berkeley and became Professor Emeritus at Hitotsubashi University. I am an alum of International Christian University in Tokyo, where I have been serving as Chair, Board of Trustees (RIJICHO) since 2019.
I am an avid skier and golfer as well as an active tennis and futsal player. Hope this is the start of a long relationship to come with FCCJ.
