Kakumi Kobayashi

Kyodo News

My name is Kakumi Kobayashi. I am an editor and writer with more than 20 years' experience working for Kyodo News's English-language World Services Section. I have mainly covered Japanese politics and diplomacy as well as defense issues in Tokyo, and from July 2022 will be senior editor at the New York Bureau.

Apart from covering stories coming out of Tokyo's Nagatacho and Kasumigaseki districts, I also interviewed many people in the Tohoku region in the days after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. I wrote stories about evacuees in blackout-hit rural towns and the school gymnasiums in tsunami-flattened areas that were used as makeshift morgues.

From 2013, I worked in Washington to follow U.S. policies on Japan and Asia during Barack Obama's presidency, particularly bilateral negotiations ahead of the signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. In 2016 I also had the opportunity to follow Obama on his trip to Hiroshima on the sidelines of the Ise-Shima G-7 Summit as part of the White House Press Corps.

After returning to Tokyo, I headed a digital team that launched a new free English site, Kyodo News Plus, in 2017, and was involved in promoting Kyodo's content via social media.
