This exhibition is being presented to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s return to Japan. Over the centuries, the Okinawan people have learned to survive severe hardships, both natural and political, with a humility and tenacious spirit that is encapsulated by the word umui. I believe the time has come to introduce this deep and gentle spiritual tradition. It is important not only for the future of the Okinawan people and their descendants; it is also important in light of the geopolitical changes we are now seeing in East Asia.
